The Cradle of Humankind is famous for a couple of things. It has a rich history of palaeontology and archaeology and is considered to be the birthplace of humanity, with fossils dating back 3.5 million years and more being discovered on a regular basis.
The Cradle is also famous (more famous?) as the go to place for outdoor enthusiasts of Johannesburg. There are many kilometres of road and MTB routes to be enjoyed on safe and picturesque routes that make the nearby city seems a world away.
The area is filled with restaurants, hotels and cafes, catering to all tastes and budgets. Many of these venues provide secure parking to the cyclists, runners and hikers, acting as a meeting points for groups.
In addition, the Cradle is host to races on many weekends, ranging from short fun runs to full scale triathlons.
All in all, the Cradle of Humankind is one of Jo’burg’s favourite weekend destinations, whether you are searching for birds, culture, exercise, a night away or you are just wanting to get married...
